Hisana abandoned Rukia as an infant because she couldn't support both herself and Rukia. Rukia grew up independently until she met Renji Abarai and other children her age. They worked together to steal food for survival and formed a makeshift family. Rukia acted tough to show her resilience. During this time, both Rukia and Renji exhibited spiritual powers. Initially, they chose not to become Shinigami, but the death of their friends led Rukia to suggest joining the academy for a better life. At the Shinigami Academy, Renji was admitted into the top class, while Rukia joined the second-ranked one. As Renji advanced in his training, they grew emotionally distant. This separation continued until Rukia was invited to join the Kuchiki family. Although Renji expressed happiness for Rukia's opportunity, both felt uneasy about the arrangement since they would likely never see each other again. Reluctantly, Rukia joined the family and was immediately inducted into the 13th Division without needing to graduate or take an entrance exam. Unbeknownst to Rukia, Byakuya adopted her to fulfill Hisana's last wish, whom he had married. In the 13th Division, Rukia did not receive a seat position due to Byakuya Kuchiki's influence, as he wanted to keep her from dangerous missions. She befriended the division's lieutenant, Kaien Shiba, who trained and mentored her. Their first training location was Mount Koifushi in Hokutan, the 3rd district of West Rukongai. Rukia greatly admired Kaien's wife, 3rd Seat Miyako Shiba. When Miyako was killed by a hollow, Rukia, Kaien, and Captain Jūshirō Ukitake hunted the hollow down. Kaien faced the hollow alone, but its special ability destroyed his zanpakutō. Rukia tried to help but was stopped by Ukitake, who explained that Kaien's fight was about honor, not survival. If Rukia intervened, Kaien would be saved but his honor would be compromised. The hollow then possessed Kaien. Ukitake engaged the hollow, but his illness allowed it to attack Rukia. Kaien momentarily regained control and impaled himself on Rukia's zanpakutō. He thanked Rukia and Ukitake for respecting his honor before dying in Rukia's arms.
