Yanagi is a teenage girl with the innate ability to heal any physical injury. Recca immediately pledged his loyalty as her ninja after witnessing her compassion when she healed a severely injured puppy in a local park (in the anime, she heals Recca after he is buried under a pile of metal pipes). She develops feelings for Recca but is too innocent to recognize them. Yanagi is also the main target of the series' antagonist, Mori Kōran, who believes her healing powers can grant him eternal life.
In the manga, it is revealed that Yanagi is the reincarnation of Princess Sakura, the daughter of Oyakata and princess of the Sawaki clan, who lived over 400 years before the series' timeline. Towards the end of the series, Recca saves Yanagi from being absorbed by the Tendō Jigoku by absorbing her soul using his flame powers. This transformation turns her into a flame spirit like Kurenai, but with a healing flame. It is this power that ultimately allows her to defeat the Tendō Jigoku once and for all.
She is known as Anna in the Filipino version of the anime.
