The mysterious dark spirit residing within the Millennium Ring, Dark Bakura is the primary antagonist to Yami Yugi. He harbors a 3,000-year-old grudge against Yami Yugi and seeks the Millennium Items to open the Door of Darkness, which grants immense evil power to anyone who unlocks it. Since he lacks a physical form, Dark Bakura takes control of Bakura's body against his will. Initially, he tormented Bakura by seizing control during games with friends, using Penalty Games to trap their souls in TRPG miniatures for the Monster World game, forcing Bakura to frequently change schools. With assistance from Yugi, Yugi's other self, Jonouchi, Anzu, and Honda (and Miho in the 1998 anime), they managed to temporarily rid Bakura of Dark Bakura's influence by defeating the final boss of Monster World, Dark Master Zorc.
However, later when the group faces being trapped in the labyrinth beneath Duelist Kingdom, the spirit within the Millennium Ring convinces Bakura to wear it again, promising that his other half will help save his friends and claiming to have changed. Unaware that Bakura had put on the Millennium Ring again, Dark Bakura aids Yami Yugi in navigating the Meikyuu Brothers' maze and reaching the surface. For some time, it was unclear whether Dark Bakura remained malevolent. At times, he helped Yugi and his friends, seemingly gaining their uneasy trust and allowing Bakura more control over his own body. However, unbeknownst to them, he killed Pegasus by extracting the Millennium Eye and taking it for himself. During the Dungeon Dice Monsters arc, it became evident that Dark Bakura planted a portion of his soul into a piece of the shattered Millennium Puzzle to uncover the True Door, aiming to manipulate events until all Millennium Items were gathered for the Shadow RPG, with the ultimate goal of opening the Door of Darkness.
In the final arc, it is revealed that Dark Bakura originated from the fusion of Thief King Bakura's soul with a fragment of the dark god Zorc Necrophades, both sealed within the Millennium Ring. He is ultimately defeated when Yami Yugi/Atem summons Horakthy, the Creator of Light, to destroy Zorc.
