Utau is a 14-year-old junior high/high school student who transitioned from a model to a singing idol.
Utau Hoshina is her stage name, while her real name is Utau Tsukiyomi, making her Ikuto's younger sister. She harbors feelings for Ikuto and continuously tries to win his affection, becoming highly agitated when she notices Ikuto showing interest in Amu Hinamori instead of her. However, she eventually becomes friends with Amu.
Initially, Utau worked as an independent artist with her hit song "Meikyuu Butterfly" and was also the vocalist for the indie band "Black Diamond," produced by her manager, Sanjo Yukari. Their music aimed to draw eggs out of children and turn them into X-Eggs. When this plan failed, Utau left Easter Company with her manager and pursued a solo singing career independently.
For a period, Utau was deeply infatuated with Ikuto, but her feelings were unreciprocated. In the first Encore chapter, she reflects on how it used to be the "best thing ever," but now that Ikuto has moved on, she feels lonely. It can be inferred from her self-reflection that she has overcome her brother complex.
Utau shares a competitive personality with Kukai. They engage in a ramen eating competition both in the anime and manga. The first Encore chapter focuses primarily on their relationship, its development, and concludes with Kukai kissing Utau!
