Hitsugaya originates from Junrinan, District 1 of Rukongai. He lived there with an elderly woman, believed to be his grandmother, Momo Hinamori, and possibly others. Not much is known about his early life, but it is established that he became a Shinigami shortly after Hinamori. Hitsugaya is also friends with Jidanbou, the West Gate Keeper, whom he taught the "city rules."
As a child, Hitsugaya was somewhat mischievous, enjoying watermelons and teasing Hinamori. She affectionately called him "Shiro-chan," while he would respond by calling her "Bed-wetter Momo." Despite being younger and shorter than Hinamori, Hitsugaya always felt protective of her. His favorite foods are watermelon and sweet nattō, and he dislikes hot weather.
Due to his natural talent, Hitsugaya quickly entered the Shinigami academy shortly after Hinamori. She continued to call him "Shiro-chan" out of habit and felt responsible for protecting him. After fulfilling a promise, she started calling him "Hitsugaya-kun" once he achieved his Zanpakutou's initial release and earned recognition as a Shinigami. Highly capable and knowledgeable, Hitsugaya soon became the youngest captain in the Gotei 13 (Thirteen Court Guard Squads).
