Tokagerou is a 600-year-old spirit from the same era as Amidamaru. Once a thief, he was killed by Amidamaru while seeking revenge, which prevented him from passing on. His intense hatred eventually turned his skin lizard-green. Known for his infamous reputation and unique fighting style called Tokage Kenpo (Lizard Style), he often refers to himself as a nasty villain but is actually a soft-hearted soul who misses maternal care.
Born into poverty, Tokagerou resorted to thievery to survive, even eating his deceased mother out of desperation. He became notorious for stealing everything—money, food, lives—and led a band of marauders that terrorized the region 600 years ago.
Using a hill as their hideout, Tokagerou and his gang ambushed Amidamaru one day. However, Amidamaru, being stronger, defeated and killed them all.
In the present day, Tokagerou seeks revenge on Amidamaru, who has no memory of him. Through research by Kyouyama Anna, they discover that he was an obscure historical figure slain by Amidamaru. Possessing Yoh's friend Umemiya Ryuunosuke "Wooden Sword" Ryuu, Tokagerou steals the Harusame (Sword of Light) from a museum and attacks Yoh and Amidamaru.
The ensuing battle forces Yoh and Amidamaru to break the Harusame to save Ryuu's life. Yoh then appeals to Tokagerou, offering himself as a vessel instead of the innocent Ryuu, believing that Tokagerou isn't as evil as he claims. When Tokagerou possesses Yoh, he finds he cannot bring himself to kill him and peacefully leaves Yoh’s body.
