Asakura Hao is the primary antagonist in Shaman King. Originally named Asaha Douji, he was born in Japan during the Heian era. In his third life, he becomes the twin brother of his descendant, Asakura Yoh. His name translates to "Leaf King." He is the most powerful shaman in the series. His early years are explored in the manga side story titled Mappa Douji.
In his first life, Asakura Hao was surrounded by the atrocities of war, leading him to view the world as a bleak and dark place. This changed when he met the small demon Ohachiyo, who introduced him to the positive aspects of life. However, after an accident involving Hao's first Over Soul, Ohachiyo merged with Hao permanently and cursed him with the perilous ability of Reishi. As an adult, Hao became a peaceful man dedicated to helping others, which led to the prosperity of the Asakura Family. It was this gentle nature that prompted him to take in the cat Matamune, whom he considered his "only friend."
However, his Reishi abilities grew too strong and eventually overwhelmed him. The constant influx of negative emotions from others created a demon within his heart. This internal turmoil fueled his desire to establish a kingdom for shamans on Earth and drove him to seek the title of Shaman King.
In his current incarnation, Hao is typically calm, cruel, and always smiling. Instances of genuine anger are rare but deadly; those who anger him often meet their end at the hands of the Spirit of Fire. He enjoys watching shaman fights, especially those involving strong shamans and his twin brother, Asakura Yoh. He claims that once Yoh reaches his limit, he will consume him to become the strongest shaman.
Hao shows a clear dislike for familial titles. He glared at Yoh when called "Nii-chan" and darkened at his nephew Asakura Hana calling him Uncle Hao. Both times, he insisted they not call him by those names.
