Ren is a shaman from China who traveled to Japan to confront Yoh Asakura and participate in the Shaman Fight in Tokyo. This backstory is omitted in the American dub. Initially introduced as a 13-year-old in the manga and the original Japanese anime, Ren appears as a 15-year-old in the English adaptation. Ren is characterized by his seriousness, logic, and emotional detachment, traits shaped by his upbringing. His father, Tao Yuan (or uncle Tao En in the English version), instilled in him a deep-seated hatred for humanity and a desire to eliminate them. Ren viewed his spirit companion, Bason, merely as a tool, believing that treating spirits as friends would lead to exploitation. Ren's anger stemmed from being forced into rigorous training and studies at a young age, which deprived him of his childhood. He despised Tao Yuan for this suffering. However, as he formed friendships with Yoh and others, he began to question his beliefs about the world. He learned to trust others and realized that not all humans were as bad as he had thought. Motivated to change, Ren returned to China to challenge his father. His first attempt to defeat his father failed, but with help from Bason, Yoh, and their friends, he was eventually freed from the dungeon where he was chained. Though initially reluctant to accept their assistance, Ren ultimately joined forces with them to defeat Tao Yuan, allowing him to move forward in life. Ren maintains a tough and confident exterior but is deeply loyal to his allies, willing to risk his life for them. He is impatient, short-tempered, and unafraid to confront those who anger him. Ren is also egotistical, often naming things after himself, such as his team "Team the Ren," much to his teammate Horohoro's annoyance. Despite this, he is intuitive, quick-witted, and sometimes stubborn, rarely following instructions or advice. Ren is skilled in various forms of combat, including martial arts, sword fighting, and shamanic abilities. He even mastered some techniques from Mikihisa Asakura through firsthand experience. It is hinted in the manga that Ren can play the erhu. As the series progresses, Ren becomes more trusting of others, forming strong bonds with Yoh and Horohoro. Although they often argue, it becomes clear that they care for each other deeply. Ren once sacrificed himself to save Horohoro, and during his recovery, Horohoro protected him fiercely. Ren's name signifies "benevolence," "toughness," and the "edge of a knife," reflecting his character. His Chinese name, Lián, means "lotus." In the English dub, he has a British accent and an obsession with milk and the number three. Ren's Furyoku level is 100,001, as seen in chapter 276. According to the Shaman King Character Book, Ren prefers girls smaller than him who are not annoying, which explains his marriage to Iron Maiden Jeanne and their son Men Tao.
