Szayel Aporro Granz is an average-sized Arrancar with shoulder-length pink hair and golden eyes. He is Yylfordt Granz's younger brother, although Szayel is significantly stronger. His hollow mask remnants form rectangular-framed glasses, giving him a scholarly look. His Arrancar outfit differs slightly from others; he wears a shorter hakama exposing shin coverings and a unique shirt with long sleeves that cover most of his hands. The chest area has extra seams, and in later appearances, he dons a cape.
Szayel serves as the scientist among the Espada, developing various spiritual tools for use by the Arrancar. Using methods such as implanting rokureichū (data-gathering devices), he can analyze opponents' spiritual powers through their defeated foes. He excels at creating devices to manipulate and suppress spiritual energy, evident in his battle with Renji Abarai. Like Mayuri Kurotsuchi, he is sadistic and views others mainly as research subjects.
Portrayed as a stereotypical intellectual, Szayel meticulously plans every detail and becomes upset when those plans are disrupted. He is snobbish and condescending to both allies and enemies, especially non-Hollow entities. This attitude extends to his allegiance to Aizen, hoping Aizen will eliminate non-Hollows once he rules Soul Society. Despite his arrogance, Szayel mockingly shows consideration by quieting his followers and himself so his opponent can speak.
Occasionally acting without Aizen's approval, Szayel displays polite behavior towards Aizen but hints at resentment when not observed. Like other Espada, he has numerous Fracción, which are modified Hollows turned into Arrancar by Aizen. Notable subordinates include Lumina and Verona, both round Arrancar with bare feet and sparse hair. When Lumina is consumed to heal her master, Szayel dismisses Verona's concerns by stating he could "make a new one" later.
Szayel first appears when Aizen gathers the Espada to announce the invasion of Hueco Mundo by Ichigo Kurosaki, Uryū Ishida, and Yasutora Sado. Despite orders to stand by, Szayel sends out the Exequias, yet Aizen does not punish him. Later, he battles Renji, Uryū, Pesche Guatiche, and Dondochakka Bilstin, using his analytical skills to gain the upper hand. However, he meets his match with Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who counters Szayel’s abilities by replacing his organs with artificial ones and deploying his bankai to consume Szayel.
Szayel is reborn through Nemu Kurotsuchi using another ability that allows him to reform after death by implanting himself into enemies. Unbeknownst to Szayel, Kurotsuchi had previously installed failsafes in case Nemu's body was invaded. One such safeguard is a drug that vastly enhances Szayel's perception and reaction time, making one second feel like a century. Unable to physically compensate for this over-enhanced mental state, Szayel is paralyzed. Kurotsuchi then stabs him, informing him that each injury will feel like it lasts a hundred years due to the drug.
