Initially, he appeared as a kind and well-respected captain, admired by many, especially his lieutenant, Momo Hinamori. A significant portion of Aizen's career was spent in the 5th Division, where he eventually became its lieutenant under former captain Shinji Hirako. Shinji kept a close eye on Aizen due to sensing something dangerous about him. A century ago, Aizen conducted experiments on Soul Reaper/hollow hybrids, developing an unknown method to transform spirits into hollows, ultimately creating the Visoreds. He framed Urahara for the hollowfication process, leading to Urahara's exile from Soul Society. During this period, Aizen met Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen, recruiting them to his cause. He later became the captain of the 5th Division, with Gin as his lieutenant and right-hand man. Gin and Kaname eventually became captains of the 3rd and 9th Divisions, respectively, but remained loyal only to Aizen. According to Aizen, even when Momo Hinamori was his lieutenant, he considered Gin his only true subordinate. When Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends invade Seireitei to rescue Rukia Kuchiki, Aizen executes an elaborate plan involving Rukia's execution and her rescue attempts, manipulating most of the other captains of Soul Society according to his will.
