Shrieker (シュリーカー, Shurīkā) is a Hollow with frog-like features and retractable bat wings on his arms. He is the fourth Hollow defeated by Ichigo Kurosaki and the second to reveal his backstory. Shrieker possesses high intelligence and, like many other Hollows, is driven by a desire to kill. However, he reveals that he was a murderer even before his death. Extremely manipulative, he tricks Yuuichi Shibata into believing that his mother could be revived if he managed to evade Shrieker for three months. This was purely for Shrieker's pleasure in killing anyone who became involved. In battle, Shrieker resorts to underhanded tactics, such as threatening to blow up Yuuichi's cage to prevent Chad from pursuing him while he hunts down Rukia. Around four or five years before the main storyline, Shrieker was a serial killer responsible for the deaths of seven or eight people. He roamed various locations, using what appeared to be a butcher knife to commit his murders. His final victim was Yuuichi Shibata's mother. As she protected her son, Shrieker stabbed her multiple times, eventually following her onto the veranda. Just as he was about to deliver the final blow, Yuuichi grabbed his shoelaces, causing him to lose balance and fall out of a high-story window. This incident resulted in Shrieker's death as a human and his subsequent transformation into a Hollow. Holding a grudge against Yuuichi, Shrieker decided to torment the boy further. He extracted Yuuichi's soul from his body and placed it inside a parakeet, promising to revive his mother if Yuuichi could evade him for three months. However, this was merely a game to attract more victims, as no Hollow can restore life to the dead. Two Shinigami had already been consumed by Shrieker in their attempts to save Yuuichi's soul.
