He was a psychotic but powerful teenager who had previously won his freedom by participating in the game before the events of the series. He yearned to return to the game and went on a rampage through Shinjuku using an SMG and a pistol, killing Hiroto Sakurai, Kenzo Sakata, and Daizaemon Kaze, while injuring or killing 387 bystanders in broad daylight. His actions not only brought new participants to Gantz but also himself, as he was killed by Kurono in a confrontation. An incredible swordsman, he was the first to wield the Gantz Saber, a katana with a retractable blade hidden in one of the apartment's rooms. Often seen as Kei Kurono's "unfeeling" and arrogant rival, his sole ambition is to be the best Gantz fighter. He has shown a willingness to take innocent lives to achieve this goal, such as killing Tae Kojima during one mission. When he earned 100 points for the second time, Izumi chose Option #2—a powerful weapon. However, before he could use it, he was attacked by a legion of vampires outside his apartment. After eliminating all of them, the four vampire leaders confronted him. Izumi managed to kill three of the leaders and was battling the blonde vampire Hikawa when his girlfriend, Ryōko, tried to save him. Izumi shielded her from the final blow, taking it on his back. He then marveled at the scores of dead vampires he had felled, stating that he was definitely going to hell. By the end of Phase I, Shion Izumi has not been revived.
