He is a psychic who receives instructions on how to unlock his latent powers from Sakata after attempting suicide. Encouraged by Sakata, he uses his newfound abilities to kill his bullies, who had sexually abused him. Later, he feels remorse, understanding the weight of being a murderer. Witnessing Izumi's Shinjuku massacre, he urges Sakata to help stop Izumi, seeing it as a chance for redemption. Despite their efforts, Izumi kills them both, leading them to Gantz.

A quick learner, he swiftly masters his powers. He dies fighting the Flame Oni but is revived by Sakata. Gantz refers to him as "Cherry," derived from the Japanese word Sakura and his online alias. He has a girlfriend named Tonkotsu, whom he met after avenging his abusers. Together, they try to catch murderers using his psychic abilities to further redeem himself. After the Osaka mission, Gantz dubs him "no longer a Cherry," implying he is no longer a virgin.
