Jouichirou Nishi is a seasoned veteran of the Gantz universe, having entered it over a year before the series began. He stumbled into this world after fleeing from police officers following a shoplifting incident. In his attempt to escape, he ended up on an apartment rooftop and tragically fell to his death.
Similar to Kurono's initial demeanor, Nishi is self-centered and adheres to a Social Darwinist philosophy. He is hesitant to share any details about Gantz or himself, yet he maintains a website where he discreetly posts information about the mysterious entity, ensuring not to break Gantz's rule against informing outsiders—a violation that would be fatal. Interestingly, Gantz addresses him as "Mr. Nishi," a formal title uncommon for how Gantz typically refers to other participants, often informally or disparagingly.
Nishi meets his end at the onset of the Tanaka/Suzuki Alien mission but returns six months later thanks to Kaze, who revives him at Kurono’s request following the conclusion of the Oni mission. Kurono hopes Nishi can provide valuable insights about Gantz to the game players.
Prior to his involvement with Gantz, Nishi endured relentless bullying and ostracization by his classmates, culminating in them throwing him out of a classroom window. In retaliation, he eliminates all of his tormentors except one girl who harbored feelings for him and did not partake in the harassment. Subsequently, civil armed forces are dispatched to eliminate Nishi. Despite managing to kill many of his assailants, he sustains severe injuries during a fierce battle with the armed forces. He narrowly escapes death when Gantz summons the Hunters for a new mission.
