Shinji Hirako previously served as the captain of the 5th Division before his lieutenant, Sōsuke Aizen. From their first encounter, Shinji distrusted Aizen and appointed him as his lieutenant to keep a close watch on him. However, due to his lack of social interaction with Aizen, Shinji was easily deceived by Aizen's actions, leading to his transformation into a hollow. Shinji has a humorous personality that adds levity to serious situations. He often annoys Hiyori Sarugaki, which usually results in her slapping him with her sandal. He also has a habit of calling cute girls he meets his "first love," despite it being an obvious lie. This behavior never extended to Hiyori, further irritating her.
An early design of Shinji can be seen in the cover art of the first chapter, indicating he was planned well before his introduction. In the anime, Shinji's outfit sometimes resembles Lupin the III, likely as a homage by the animators.
Shinji's hollow mask looks like a pharaoh's mask. He is adept at using his hollow powers, demonstrated when he overwhelmed Grimmjow Jeagerjaques with a single cero blast. Video games depict him splitting cero blasts into a pyramid-shaped attack.
His zanpakutō, Sakanade, creates an inverted world. Upon release, the sword emits a scent causing optical illusions that reverse an opponent's sense of direction, including up and down, left and right, and forward and backward. This inversion affects not just the sense of direction but also eyesight and where one gets cut.
In its sealed form, Sakanade looks like a normal katana with a red hilt and sheath. When released, its hilt transforms into a large ring through which Shinji places his hand, allowing him to control the blade's movement without physically holding it. The ring is attached to a standard sword hilt with a rectangular guard. The first few inches of the blade are covered by an extension of the guard. The blade is straight and slim, ending in a slanted razor-like edge with five holes along its length.
Shinji has a tattoo on his tongue, visible in episode 142.
After Aizen's defeat, Shinji resumes his position as the captain of the 5th Division.
