Shiki is the protagonist of the Tsukihime series. He is a kind, honest, and slightly playful high school sophomore. Anemia often leaves him prone to fainting spells, but he strives to lead a normal life. Shiki possesses the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception (Chokushi no Magan), enabling him to see "Lines" and "Points" that allow him to kill anything using subconscious assassination techniques. Despite his frequent brushes with death, Shiki values life immensely and would never take a human life.
He acquired the Mystic Eyes during childhood while recovering from a near-death experience in the hospital. Escaping his room one day, he wandered into nearby fields where he met the magus Aozaki Aoko, whom Shiki now calls Sensei. As a parting gift, she gave him glasses to seal the power of his eyes and imparted unforgettable life lessons. After leaving the hospital, Shiki lived with the Arima family for eight years before being summoned back to the Toono Mansion by his sister Akiha following their father's death. On the day of his return, Shiki left school early and, in a fit of madness, noticed, stalked, and seemingly "killed" the vampire Arcueid Brunestud. He fainted from shock and woke up at the mansion later that evening, finding nothing unusual. Assuming it was a dream, Shiki continued his life until encountering Arcueid the next day on his way to school. Thus began another turn of events in his life.
Known as Nanaya Shiki, he is the last of the Nanaya clan, demon hunters. Adopted by Toono Makihisa after leading the massacre of the Nanaya, due to the similarity between Shiki's name and his own son, "SHIKI". Following an incident involving both Shiki and "SHIKI" in the courtyard, Toono Makihisa tampered with Shiki's memories to erase knowledge of the Nanaya and "SHIKI," aiming to maintain the image of his son "Toono Shiki." He announced "SHIKI" dead but secretly confined him, sending Shiki to live with the Arima family due to his perceived physical unfitness to become the next head of the Toono house.
When Shiki's Nanaya blood activates ("Nanaya mode"), he experiences strong urges to "Kill," which can manifest as not just assassination but also sexual desire and destruction. These traits re-emerge when triggered by supernatural encounters or moments of crisis. Over time, Shiki grows accustomed to these impulses, maintaining greater mental stability.
Excessive use of his Mystic Eyes causes headaches, straining his brain. Pushing too hard risks permanent brain damage, a warning he has received many times.

Shiki does not meet Arcueid, and the story delves deeper into the conspiracies surrounding the residents of the Toono Mansion: Akiha, Hisui, and Kohaku, as well as Shiki and "SHIKI."
