Arcueid Brunestud is the White Princess of the True Ancestors. The title of Brunestud was bestowed upon those True Ancestors capable of manifesting the Millennium Castle Brunestud, likened to a vampire royal family, though this isn't entirely accurate. True Ancestors were beings modeled after TYPE-MOON, the ultimate entity of the moon also known as the Crimson Moon. In ancient times, Earth lacked a defense mechanism against humanity, nothing to keep them in check. Consequently, the Crimson Moon descended and offered to help the planet create a race of supreme beings to govern over humanity, thus becoming the 'consciousness of the planet.' True Ancestors are compared to natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons; their "...actions, while evil and without justification, would come as naturally to her (Arcueid and other True Ancestors) as breathing." However, this race had an inherent flaw: they possessed the same bloodlust as the original, the Crimson Moon. To suppress this impulse, True Ancestors needed to expend significant portions of their power, but with no cure and as time passed, the impulse grew stronger. More and more True Ancestors succumbed, drinking blood indiscriminately, while others likely entered eternal sleep.
The creation of Arcueid did not stem from a specific need among the True Ancestors. They typically crafted new True Ancestors only for particular purposes. There was no necessity for someone as powerful as her, yet she emerged from nothingness, merely as a product to achieve the pointless goal of "the strongest True Ancestor." Her immense strength was harnessed to turn her into a weapon, the executioner of fallen True Ancestors and the most potent Dead Apostles. According to Ciel, this occurred around the 12th century AD when the number of fallen True Ancestors was exceptionally high. She performed this duty admirably, but she was nothing more than a tool. She was taught only what she needed to know to hunt her targets, to the extent that she remained oblivious to the fact that she shared the same nature as those she was meant to destroy. After every kill, she went to sleep, her accumulated memories erased.
As the executioner, she exhibited no vampiric impulses, and the other True Ancestors believed she had none. A priest from the church seeking perfect immortality, Michael Roa Valdamjong, needed to become a Dead Apostle to continue his research since he had reached the limits of his human body's potential. Arcueid, ignorant of her vampiric nature and the consequences of drinking blood, was easily deceived by Roa into consuming his blood, causing her to go berserk. She wiped out most of the True Ancestors, transformed Roa into one of the strongest Dead Apostles, and had a substantial portion of her power stolen by him before regaining her sanity long enough to chain herself to the throne and fall asleep. From then on, she had to suppress her urge to drink blood like any other True Ancestors. The remaining True Ancestors were eradicated either by Roa or other Dead Apostles who made a game of trying to assassinate their creators.
Arcueid eventually managed to destroy Roa's original body, though it required an alliance with the Burial Agency. Roa wasn't killed, however, as he had mastered reincarnation, constantly reborn into chosen host bodies. These hosts were selected based on social standing (wealthy families with influence) and the physical/magical potential of the body. After destroying Roa's original body, Arcueid slept and only awoke to repeatedly kill Roa's reincarnations, but she could never eliminate him and reclaim her power as he would simply reincarnate each time. By the time of Tsukihime, Roa had reincarnated 17 times, with his last incarnation being Tohno SHIKI.
