Ryuji Otogi is a talented game inventor, known for creating Dungeon Dice Monsters (in the anime and English manga) or Dragons, Dice, & Dungeons (in the Japanese manga). His father, Mr. Otogi, also known as "Mr. Clown," groomed Ryuji from birth to be an exceptional games player with the intent of avenging himself against Sugoroku Mutou. Sugoroku had defeated Mr. Otogi in a Shadow Game called the Devil's Board Game, which caused him to age 50 years in one night as a Penalty Game. Ryuji was transferred to Domino High School, where Yugi Mutou, Sugoroku's grandson, attends. Initially, his father saw this as an opportunity for Ryuji to defeat Yugi and fulfill their family's revenge by taking the Millennium Puzzle. However, Ryuji found himself moved by the games he played with Yugi and could not bring himself to hate him, ultimately rejecting his father's plan and becoming friends with Yugi and his group. Ryuji is generally serious and quiet but also level-headed and very intelligent.
In the second anime adaptation, the influence of Ryuji's father is omitted entirely, and Ryuji's personality is reimagined. Here, it is explained that Ryuji befriended Pegasus, who became fond of Dungeon Dice Monsters, and wanted to help market the game. After losing to Yugi, Ryuji felt betrayed when Pegasus lost interest in their earlier deal. Blaming Yugi for cheating against Pegasus, he initially harbored resentment towards him. However, after learning the truth, he reconciles with Yugi and joins his group of friends. Despite his arrogance and sarcastic nature, Ryuji remains smart and level-headed. His personality often leads to conflicts with Honda, especially over Shizuka, whom they both have a crush on in the anime.
