Gold Roger, later revealed to be named Gol D. Roger, was the Pirate King, the strongest pirate alive, and the owner of the legendary treasure known as One Piece. Born in Loguetown, Roger became famous for achieving what many believed to be impossible—he conquered the Grand Line. Even before embarking on his journey, he was the only man who showed no fear of the Grand Line's dangers and was instead excited about venturing into it. Despite warnings that ships never returned from that treacherous ocean, Roger remained undeterred; in fact, he declared that this very danger was why he was determined to go.
He was said to be utterly fearless, and those who witnessed his execution claimed that he even grinned just before his death. Many people who have met Monkey D. Luffy and knew Roger have remarked on the striking similarities between the two.
