He was appointed as a Shichibukai eight years ago. His name originates from "jinbei-zame," which means "whale shark" in Japanese. His epithet, "Kaikyou," can be translated as "Strait" or "Channel." However, since it is written with different kanji (海侠の), the "kyou" part (侠) comes from "ninkyō" (任侠), an honorific used for high-ranking yakuza members, making his epithet a clever pun in Japanese. During the Impel Down arc, Jinbe refused to go to war with Whitebeard and was imprisoned in Impel Down, sharing a cell with Ace. He then teamed up with Luffy and others to rescue Ace, ultimately deciding to relinquish his position as a Shichibukai. Following the events of the Whole Cake Island arc, Jinbe eventually joins the Straw Hat Pirates as their helmsman.
