Unohana is a soft-spoken, polite, and caring woman who serves as the captain of the 4th Division. She addresses everyone with honorifics, including her subordinates, and rarely displays panic or distress. Even when angry, such as when members of other divisions bully her division, she remains polite, maintaining her smile while emitting a dangerous aura that scares others away instantly. She wears the standard shinigami captain uniform but opts for an obi instead of the usual sash, and her hair is styled in a braid draped over her chest. As one of the longest-serving captains, alongside Kyouraku and Ukitake, Unohana has a calming presence that makes those around her feel at ease. However, her anger is equally formidable, causing even members of the 11th squad to become paralyzed with fear when they provoke her wrath. In omake chapters and scenes, it's revealed that Unohana has a curiosity about convenience stores in the world of the living and enjoys picking out racy swimsuits for Isane when she visits the living world. Unohana is the original "Kenpachi," a title given to the strongest shinigami. Though she now goes by Unohana Retsu, her true name is Unohana Yachiru. She was the founder of the 11th Division and its first captain. Before joining the Gotei 13, she was the most diabolical criminal in Soul Society. At some point, she learned healing techniques from Kirinji Tenjirou.
