The eccentric American Chairman of Industrial Illusions (I²) and the creator of Duel Monsters (originally named Magic & Wizards). He wields the Millennium Eye. Pegasus emerges as the manga's fourth primary antagonist (and the second anime adaptation's first main antagonist), challenging Yugi to a Shadow Game to compel him to attend his tournament, Duelist Kingdom, and face him. After Yugi loses a timed match, Pegasus takes his grandfather Sugoroku Mutou's soul as a Penalty Game. Throughout the battles leading to Pegasus' castle, Yugi communicates with his grandfather via a camcorder. In the second anime, Sugoroku is trapped in a Soul Prison Duel Monsters card. Pegasus also kidnaps Mokuba to lure his brother Seto Kaiba to the tournament, later capturing their souls as well.
Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Pegasus had a lover named Cyndia, who died after her 17th birthday (in the anime, she dies after their marriage). His actions were driven by the hope of resurrecting her. Eventually, Pegasus is defeated in a final Duel Monsters game by Yugi and Dark Yugi at the end of the arc and must release the captured souls. He is subsequently killed by Dark Bakura, who takes his Millennium Item. In the Duel Monsters anime, he survives Dark Bakura's attack and makes brief appearances in later seasons.
In the original manga, Pegasus' story about meeting Shadi and discovering the "evil intelligence" of the Millennium Items prompts Yami Yugi's quest to uncover his own identity and origins. During his final Shadow Game with Yugi/Dark Yugi, he reveals his discovery of an ancient Egyptian Shadow Game in the Valley of the Kings, which inspired the creation of Duel Monsters and other card games like tarot cards. In the second anime, as the creator of Duel Monsters and discoverer of its ancient Egyptian roots, Pegasus plays a key role due to his extensive knowledge of the game and its mysterious origins. His name is Pegasus J. Crawford in Japanese versions and Maximillion Pegasus in the VIZ Media-translated manga.
