Don Kanonji is a well-known spirit medium with a popular TV show called "Ghost Bust" (known in English as "Spirit Hunter"), which attracts 25% of Japan's viewership. His famous catchphrases are "Smells like bad spirits!" and "Spirits are always with you." The show focuses on exorcising ghosts and sending their spirits to heaven. Initially, Kanonji's method inadvertently turns souls into hollows, though he remains unaware of this. After being informed by Ichigo Kurosaki about his mistake, he earns the title of "#1 Disciple" for his assistance.
Since then, Kanonji has mainly appeared in omake chapters, where he forms a hollow-fighting group named the Karakura Superheroes. This group includes the Kurosaki sisters and the children from the Urahara Shop, aiming to boost the show's declining ratings. With their help and his "Golden Kanonball" (a small ball of golden light that moves slowly but explodes with surprising power), they manage to keep the hollow presence in Karakura Town to a minimum.
He makes another appearance during the "Fake Karakura Town" arc when Aizen corners Tatsuki and her friends. Although he primarily amuses Aizen and seems useless, he does help Tatsuki and her friends escape after Rangiku yells at him and practically forces him to act.
