Meia suffers from claustrophobia and has a traumatic past. As a young girl, the life support systems in her home quadrant failed, leading to a mass evacuation where there were not enough lifeboats. Her parents pushed her onto the last ship amid the crowd, and she lost them in the chaos. Alone, she turned to crime and street fights to survive, driven by insecurity from people blaming her parents for the catastrophe. Magno Vivian appeared and offered her a laser ring, inviting her to join the pirates. With renewed purpose, Meia rose through the ranks quickly. As squadron commander, she leads the other Dreads in battle and is often referred to as "leader" or "chief" by others. The crew appreciates her and tries to organize surprise birthday parties for her. However, she despises such occasions and once flew off in her Dread to scout ahead of the Nirvana just to avoid the crew's celebrations. When her Dread unites with Hibiki's Vanguard, they form the Vandread Meia-type (White Wing), resembling a silver eagle. Its primary attack is a high-velocity ram that can pierce nearly all enemy units in its path. While Meia never openly admits having romantic feelings for Hibiki, it becomes clear midway through the first season that he is the only male she doesn't outright hate. Captain Magno even comments that among all the women on the Nirvana, Meia most resembles Hibiki in temperament and personality. In her quarters aboard the Nirvana, Meia keeps a jewelry box given by her "O ma," containing a few keepsakes and a family photo she managed to save from her home.
