Mayuri Kurotsuchi is the Captain of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13 and the second president of the Shinigami Research Institute. He assumed this role after Kisuke Urahara was exiled by Soul Society. His lieutenant is Nemu Kurotsuchi, an artificially-created "daughter."
Mayuri's appearance is skeletal with a skull-like face. His fingernails are blue, except for one long nail on his right middle finger. In the anime, he has blue hair and yellow eyes when unmasked. He wears a white hat with two ends pointing to his right and a large purple scarf around his neck. He repaints his makeup every morning.
Mayuri's left arm can extend like a grappling hook, and he can pull out part of his ear, which transforms into a scythe attached to his body. He can also blend into his surroundings using a camouflage that flakes away when he reveals himself.
As a researcher, Mayuri embodies the stereotype of a mad scientist. He sees everyone and everything as objects for research rather than living beings. He shows little respect for others and once turned his own men into human bombs to capture Uryū Ishida and Orihime Inoue for experimentation. He also withheld information about the Bount to capture one for research.
Mayuri's favorite food is pike fish, while he dislikes onions. In his free time, he reads every character published in Seireitei Communication and writes a serialization titled "Effective Medication for the Brain," which is highly popular among readers.
In battle, Mayuri enjoys torturing his opponents slowly until they can hardly stand.
Little is known about Mayuri's early history, except that he was confined in a small prison cell in the Maggot's Nest before being freed by Kisuke Urahara. He later became vice-captain of the newly formed Research and Development Institute and eventually succeeded Urahara as captain of the 12th Division and president of the Research Institute.
Master Scientist/Inventor: As head of the Shinigami Research Institute, Mayuri is a talented inventor and scientist, creating numerous devices and techniques to aid him in battle or research. He has no moral boundaries and will go to any lengths to achieve his goals.
Master Strategist: Mayuri is well-prepared and studies his adversaries thoroughly to gain advantages. He always has contingency plans in case things don't go as expected.
Body Modification: Mayuri has extensively researched body modifications and upgraded various parts of his body to function as weapons or provide useful abilities. His left arm extends like a grappling hook, and part of his ear forms a scythe for use as a kusarigama. He can also blend into his environment with a topical camouflage.
Master Chemist: Mayuri is skilled in chemistry, having created a drug that slows down a person's perception of time, making one second feel like 100 years. He has also developed a regenerative serum that can regrow limbs upon injection.
Environment Melding Technique: Mayuri can blend into his surroundings, likely achieved through scientific means.
Zanpakutō:
Ashisogi Jizō (疋殺地蔵; Leg-Cutting Jizō): Its sealed form resembles a giant baby's head. The hilt is wrapped in cloth with spiky protrusions below the blade.
Shikai: Ashisogi Jizō transforms into a deformed trident with curved, serpentine blades. The baby's mouth secretes a poisonous vapor that severs brain signals controlling movement, causing paralysis.
Bankai: Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō (金色疋殺地蔵; Golden Leg-Cutting Jizō) produces a giant caterpillar in a red cape with a grotesque baby's head and a silver halo. It breathes a lethal poison derivative of Mayuri's blood, and numerous blades can extend from its chest to skewer opponents.
Mayuri's Zanpakutō also allows him to transform into a liquid when he stabs himself, effectively escaping battles.
