Heir to a prominent family of spiritualists, Maya serves as Phoenix's obligatory perky sidekick throughout all three games. Maya is optimistic, excitable, friendly, curious, and an avid fan of all things Steel Samurai. Like her sister, she is tenaciously loyal to a fault and very attached to her Naruhodou-kun. Though not always the brightest, she is incredibly loyal and outgoing. Originally, Mayoi was set to work in Chihiro's office, training to become a lawyer. However, the producers felt that Naruhodou had too many allies and asked for one to be cut. This led to the creation of the Turnabout Sister's case, using spirit channeling to merge two of Naruhodou's allies into one character. Maya's spiritual powers are still somewhat underdeveloped, and she sometimes struggles to call spirits. Mayoi has an older sister named Chihro. Her mother, Misty Fey, has been missing for 15 years, but she has an aunt, Morgan, and a cousin, Harumi. Growing up in Kurain, Mayoi trained to become a spiritual medium. After her mother's disappearance when she was two, and later her sister's departure from the village, she became destined to be the heir of her family. Despite her sister leaving home, they remain in close contact and have a strong bond. Name Origin: English: "Fey" was likely chosen as a last name due to its connection to magic/spiritualism (as in, Morgan le Fay). Maya closely resembles her Japanese name, Mayoi. Japanese: The creator selected Mayoi from a list of kanji he liked. Together, they mean "True Evening," a mysterious name that fits perfectly with the opening setting of Reversal Sisters.
