Detective Dick Gumshoe is the sole detective with whom Phoenix Wright interacts in the series. Despite his good intentions, he isn't the most astute investigator. Gumshoe takes immense pride in his work and boasts about his "strong bond of trust" with the prosecutor's office. He is generally cheerful, hardworking, and eager to please. However, his serious approach to his job often leads to conflicts when he tries to assist both sides of a case. He can also be easily discouraged. Gumshoe has two distinct speaking styles depending on the version of the game. In the English version, he frequently ends sentences with "Pal." In the Japanese version, he uses slang that slurs the ends of his sentences, such as turning "nan desu ka?" into "nansska?" This can be heard in the TGS trailer. The reason Gumshoe appears to be the only working detective throughout the series is due to his use of "powers of persuasion" to get himself assigned to numerous cases. Gumshoe has no known family members but is very loyal to Prosecutor Edgeworth. Not much is known about Gumshoe's background, except that he became a detective around six months before the case of State vs Fawles. Name Origin English: "Dick" clearly references his role as a "detective," while "Gumshoe" is common slang for a private investigator. Japanese: "Itonokogiri" roughly translates to "a saw." The creator chose this name for its uniqueness. "Keisuke" was inspired by a musician. French: Derived from "detective."
