Marin owns a beachside inn and serves as a mother figure to Sun Otonashi. She is aware of yōkai because her husband was killed by Kanade Kamiya four years ago. This tragic event damaged her dream of running the best inn possible, leading her into depression and heavy drinking. However, her life changed when she found San struggling on the streets a year later and adopted her, unaware that San was a siren, the same species responsible for her husband's death. When San revealed her true form after Kanade's return, Marin was initially horrified. But after San took a critical blow to protect her and defeated Kamiya, Marin realized it was foolish to fear San based on her appearance. She came to accept San fully.
