A seventeen-year-old Japanese schoolgirl named Kurumi acts as the mother-figure and breadwinner for her family, due to her mother's poor health. She works at a convenience store, leading a normal life until she saves notorious Hong Kong mobster Hak Lung. Instantly attracted to each other, Kurumi is taken to Hong Kong by Hak Lung and his men, initially thinking it was just a reward and she would return home soon. However, Hak Lung wanted her to stay with him, promising to take care of her family in Japan.
Kurumi and Hak Lung lived together seemingly normally. They resided in Hak Lung's flat and attended his school. Kurumi befriended some of Hak Lung's trusted men, known as the Four Celestial Kings, finding particular friendship with cross-dressing Fo Lung. She also made friends with the beautiful Lai Lan but faced disdain from her peers because of her nationality and relationship with Hak Lung, who was popular and powerful within the school.
Hak Lung referred to Kurumi as his "airen," meaning "lover" on an intimate level. Although aware of Hak Lung's status as a mafia leader, Kurumi remained unaware of the brutal inner workings of his organization for much of the series.
Lai Lan, whom Kurumi considered her best friend, plotted against her out of jealousy and desire for Hak Lung, who was her fiancé only in name. Lai Lan orchestrated attempts to harass and rape Kurumi, believing this would hurt Hak Lung. Upon discovering Lai Lan's involvement, Hak Lung killed her in front of Kurumi, causing Kurumi to fear and hate him, which was part of Lai Lan's plan.
After Lai Lan's death, Kurumi feared Hak Lung might kill her too, cowering in fear that he had grown tired of her. To ensure Kurumi could not leave, Hak Lung repeatedly raped her, making her body dependent on him. Despite this, Kurumi still loved Hak Lung and did everything to stay by his side, even when ordered to be Fo Lung's mistress.
At one point, Kurumi attempted suicide but was stopped by Fo Lung. She later fell down a flight of stairs, losing all memories of Hong Kong and the Dragon King Organization. Hak Lung then decided to start over with Kurumi, trying to rebuild their relationship without the mental scars.
After reuniting with her family and regaining her memories, Kurumi accepted Hak Lung's marriage proposal. Outside the church where they were to be married, Hak Lung met his end at the hands of Kurumi's acquaintance, Ka Fai.
