Kouta is a sophomore student who frequently faced bullying at school. He is deeply passionate about firearms and has extensive knowledge of various weapons and military equipment that the group encounters. At the start of the story, he assisted Saya Takagi in escaping a dangerous situation by following her instructions. His sharpshooting abilities have been crucial for the group's survival. During a month-long trip to America, he received training from the US military contractor Blackwater USA, which intensified his obsession with weapons.
Kouta harbors unrequited feelings for Saya and occasionally tries to ask her out, only to be turned down. Before departing from Saya’s family mansion, her father entrusted her safety to Kouta and Takashi. Saya once mentioned that both Kouta and Takashi are the most likely to break under the ongoing pressure. Kouta has developed a strong bond with Alice, often spending time playing with her.
The character Kouta Hirano from the manga series Highschool of the Dead is inspired by the renowned manga artist of the same name, known for creating "Hellsing".
