Appearance:
Kensei is a tall, muscular man with sharp features, short light-gray or silver hair, and golden eyes (brown in the anime). He has a distinctive "69" tattoo on his chest, symbolizing his last name "Muguruma" (which includes the kanji for "6") and his position as the 9th Division captain. This tattoo inspired Shūhei Hisagi to get a similar design on his face. During his time as a captain, Kensei wore a customized shihakusho with a rope belt, a sleeveless kimono, and haori along with black gloves. Currently, he wears a blue and white basketball jersey, green cargo pants, black combat boots, and orange fingerless gloves. In the manga, his shirt is depicted as black with white and orange outlines. As a Vizard, he has acquired several gold piercings, including one above his eyebrow and three on his left ear. He bears a slight resemblance to Jin Kariya from the Bounts.
Personality:
Unlike some of the other Vizards, Kensei is portrayed as a more serious character, often frustrated by the immaturity of others. A skilled and respected battlefield commander, he employs a brutal fighting style, frequently blasting his opponents apart. Outside of battle, he has a blunt and slightly aggressive demeanor, attempting to cheer up a tearful Hisagi in a manner reminiscent of an army drill sergeant. However, he appears more passive among the Vizards. He is most irritated by his former lieutenant, Mashiro Kuna, who can aggravate him even when asleep. The 'Can't Fear Your Own World' novels highlight his valor.
History:
About 100 years ago, Kensei was the captain of the 9th Division, with Mashiro Kuna as his lieutenant. Despite her childish behavior, she often annoyed him. During an investigation into mysterious disappearances in Rukongai, he fought off a giant Hollow and saved Shūhei Hisagi, who would later become the 9th Division's lieutenant. One night, his entire group was attacked, and he was stabbed from behind by Kaname Tōsen. He then appeared as a half-Hollow and attacked Hiyori Sarugaki and Shinji Hirako before being restrained by Hachi's Kido binding spell. They were eventually saved from turning into Hollows by Kisuke Urahara and escaped to Earth.
Powers:
Tachikaze (断地風, lit. Earth-Severing Wind): In its sealed form, it appears as a short katana with a rectangular guard shaped like an 'H' and a white hilt wrapping.
Shikai: Activated by the command "Blow it away" (吹っ飛ばせ, futtobase), Tachikaze transforms into a small survival/combat knife with a ring on the dull edge of the hilt.
Shikai Special Ability: In this form, Kensei can charge and fire spiritual energy from the blade, creating transparent air blades to cut enemies from a distance. He is quite powerful, easily destroying a giant Hollow with one blast and severing Ichigo's hollow form arm. In video games, his fighting style combines Western Boxing techniques with Tachikaze. As a former captain, he also possesses Bankai.
Hollowfication:
Kensei prefers his Shinigami abilities over his Hollow powers, making him unique among the Vizards. His Hollow form is a large, bulky humanoid with armored hands and feet, featuring thick cylindrical protrusions on its back and forearms.

Hollow Mask: His mask resembles a flat hockey face guard with six slitted eye holes arranged in two columns and extensions that frame his head.
