Yamato Kansuke is a police inspector hailing from Nagano Prefecture. His immediate subordinate is Detective Uehara Yui. Yamato suffered the loss of his left eye in a snow avalanche, leaving an X-shaped scar where his eye once was. The same incident caused significant and irreversible damage to his left leg, necessitating the use of a forearm crutch for mobility. Yamato was raised in a small village in Nagano alongside Uehara. Like many others from their village, they admired police officer and local hero Kai Kuroto, whose influence led both to pursue careers in law enforcement. One year before the Fuurinkazan Case, Yamato pursued a parole jumper he suspected of involvement in Kai's mysterious death into the mountains. There, he was caught in an avalanche that cost him his left eye and severely damaged his left leg. He was missing and presumed dead for several days until his school friend and fellow police inspector, Morofushi "Koumei" Taka'aki, disobeyed orders to track down the criminal and find Yamato. After recovering, he returned to the force and resumed his efforts to solve Kai's death. Compared to other police inspectors like Megure, Yokomizo, and Yamamura, Yamato is portrayed as very serious and hard-boiled. He often displays a short temper and has been known to yell at and intimidate suspects. This aspect of his personality leads to visible annoyance with Kogorou's ignorance and Yamamura's goofiness. However, he does have softer moments, though they are rare, and there are hints that he acknowledges and accepts Uehara's affection towards him. With the assistance of Conan and Heiji, the case was eventually resolved, and soon after, Uehara rejoined the police force as his partner. Yamato shares a petty rivalry with fellow police detective Koumei, often competing to see who can solve a case first. Despite this rivalry, they remain close friends, and Yamato once even ran into a burning mansion to save Koumei. Yamato also recognizes Conan's intelligence and treats him as an adult and equal.
