Haibara Ai, whose real name is Miyano Shiho, is the creator of the APTX 4869 poison that caused Kudou Shinichi to shrink into Edogawa Conan. She herself is also a victim of this poison. Formerly known as Sherry within the Black Organization, she now lives in hiding with Professor Agasa and is among the few who know that Shinichi is actually Conan. Miyano Shiho and her older sister, Miyano Akemi, were born into the clandestine criminal syndicate known as "The Black Organization." Her English mother, Miyano Elena, and her Japanese father, Miyano Atsushi, were both scientists working on a crucial secret project for the Black Organization. While Haibara was still young, her parents died in what was reported as an accident. Although Akemi led a normal life, the highly intelligent Haibara was groomed to continue her parents' research. As a child prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, and later returned to Japan to complete her parents' secret project. Shiho was unhappy that the Black Organization was using the incomplete APTX 4869 for murder, which was not the drug's intended purpose. When she learned that her sister Akemi had been killed without any explanation, she decided to stop her research until the Black Organization provided a satisfactory explanation. Instead, they confined her in a small room awaiting execution. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 intending to commit suicide, but instead shrank into an eight-year-old girl. In her new, smaller body, she escaped from the Black Organization and tried to reach Shinichi's house, hoping he might help her. Exhausted, she collapsed in front of Shinichi's house, where she was found by Professor Agasa, who took her in. It turned out later that Agasa had been acquainted with her parents, especially her father, although he did not know at the time that they had children or were part of the Black Organization. To prevent the discovery of her transformation, Shiho and Professor Agasa created the alias Haibara Ai. As Haibara, she attends Teitan Elementary School with Kudou Shinichi's shrunken form, Edogawa Conan. After her first adventure with the Detective Boys investigating the disappearance of a schoolmate's brother, she revealed her true identity to Conan and admitted to developing the APTX 4869. Initially stunned and then outraged, Conan protested her presence, but over time he accepted Haibara as a friend and fellow victim, though her cynicism and secretive nature sometimes irritate him. Haibara also joined the ranks of the Detective Boys, and although she does not think too highly of their immature antics, she has come to value them all as close friends. Haibara has a calm and cool personality, sharp wit, and high intelligence. When she first escaped from the Black Organization, she was cynical and kept others at a distance. Over time, she has warmed up to her new life as a child and formed strong relationships with Conan, the Detective Boys, Agasa, and Ran. She tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that could expose their identities, often surprised by his actions that usually result in gaining the information he needs while keeping their identities secret. However, whenever Conan acts recklessly concerning keeping his identity from Ran, Haibara plans ahead to ensure he remains undiscovered.
