Kojima Genta is a student at Teitan Elementary when Shinichi joins his class under the alias Edogawa Conan. Soon after, he and his classmate Ayumi decide to investigate a supposedly haunted mansion, convincing Conan to join them. When their friend and classmate Mitsuhiko voices skepticism about supernatural hauntings, Genta forcefully 'persuades' him to come along as well. It turns out that the haunting is a cover for an old murder case. Not long after, they accidentally acquire a treasure map, leading Ayumi, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Conan on a hunt for a stash of stolen Italian gold coins. During this adventure, Conan saves them from being killed by mafia members who are also after the gold. After resolving the case, Mitsuhiko joins Genta and Ayumi in forming the core of an amateur detective group, the Detective Boys. Genta quickly proclaims himself the leader of the group, but his lackluster leadership skills often go unnoticed in the field. In reality, everyone (including Genta) unconsciously sees Conan as the true leader. Genta's school shoe locker serves as a mailbox for any fellow students to present cases for them to solve. Genta has a deep love for food, especially unagi, and can eat more than all the other Detective Boys members combined. When discussions of money arise, Genta tends to think about it in terms of how many bowls of unagi he could buy. He also frequently confuses certain English terms with similar-sounding words, especially if they relate to food, and sometimes struggles with reading even the most common words, which occasionally causes some ridicule from his classmates and friends. His impulsive personality, lack of awareness of his surroundings, and tendency to act without thinking often lands the Detective Boys (or at least himself) in difficult situations. Despite being brash, outspoken, and sometimes intimidating, Genta is actually very kind and reliable. He is a good friend to Ayumi and Mitsuhiko and has shown great admiration for his father, who is considered a classic "Child of Edo."
