Yoshida Ayumi is a student at Teitan Elementary when Shinichi joins her class after being shrunk by the drug APTX 4869. Soon after, Ayumi and her classmate Genta come up with the idea of investigating a supposedly haunted mansion. They convince Conan to join them, and Genta also recruits Mitsuhiko, who had voiced skepticism about supernatural hauntings. It turns out that the haunting was a cover-up for an old murder case. After solving this mystery, the four friends decide to stick together, forming the core of what would become the Detective Boys. For a while, Ayumi is the only girl in the group until Haibara joins. During a case involving stolen Italian gold coins, just before the official formation of the Detective Boys, Conan saves the group from Mafioso who were after the gold. This earns Ayumi's gratitude, which soon develops into a serious crush on him. Ayumi is a naive yet courageous and innocent girl who often acts as the team's cheerful spirit. She has a clear crush on Conan, making him feel uncomfortable, though Ayumi believes he has feelings for Haibara because he tries to protect her and she frequently sees them talking privately. Over time, Ayumi becomes closer friends with Haibara, who allows her to use the more informal term "Ai-chan" when addressing her. When working on a case, Ayumi often makes simple but crucial observations that help advance and resolve the investigation. For example, she unlocked one of the codes from the Momotaro container found by the Detective Boys in Kurashiki by deducing it likely referred to one of the statues at the Oohara Art Museum: they needed to walk 25 steps from the statue in the direction it was facing.
