Kaname Tousen was formerly the Captain of the 9th Division in the Gotei 13.
As the Captain of the 9th Division, which is responsible for editing Seireitei Communication, Tousen served as the chief editor of this journal. He authored a series called "The Path of Justice," which initially lacked popularity until he started including cooking recipes in his articles. This change made his writings more appealing to female Shinigami and highlighted his culinary skills. His favorite dishes include chicken stewed with carrots and other sophisticated meals. He dislikes pickled foods.
Tousen has unique relationships with several Arrancars. He views Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez similarly to how he sees Kenpachi Zaraki: as a killing machine that will only bring more bloodshed. Wonderweiss Margera shows great affection towards him, which Tousen attributes to their shared purity of spirit, suggesting that pure spirits tend to attract and follow each other.
He was revealed to be a co-conspirator working for Sousuke Aizen and left Soul Society along with Aizen and Gin Ichimaru. Subsequently, he became a Commander in Aizen's Army of Arrancar. This turn of events put him at odds with his former closest friend, Sajin Komamura, and his previous Lieutenant in the 9th Division, Shuuhei Hisagi.
Tousen's life philosophy is to "take the path with the least bloodshed." This belief led him to follow Sousuke Aizen. However, he is aware of Aizen's plan to create the King's Key, which requires the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Despite his creed, he was willing to attack and kill members of his own division, even hollowfying his captain while acting as the 5th seat. Both Tousen and Gin Ichimaru were identified by Kenpachi Zaraki as being afraid of death. Tousen later confirmed this fear, stating he dreaded assimilating into Shinigami culture and dying without purpose. His self-description as a "pure being" also reveals a degree of pride and arrogance. Although he often mentioned how much his friend loved the world, Tousen himself harbored hatred towards it, blaming it for taking away his friend.
