Kaien Shiba served as the lieutenant of the 13th Division under Juushiro Ukitake until his death, which occurred at the hands of a Hollow that also killed his wife, Miyako Shiba.
Kaien was highly respected and admired by many in the 13th Division for his strong sense of ethics. Despite his rough demeanor and outspoken nature, his grounded approach made him a role model for everyone. He treated all division members equally, regardless of their social status or rank, earning him popularity among both aristocrats and commoners within the division.
He was the first person in Seireitei to treat Rukia like an ordinary individual after her adoption into the Kuchiki family. Before Kaien, Rukia was shown outward respect but criticized behind her back. She appreciated how Kaien treated her as an equal, leading to hints of romantic feelings from her side. However, she did not pursue anything because Kaien was married to Miyako Shiba, the third seat of the 13th Division.
Kaien believed that one's "heart" is defined by the will to fight and protect. He adhered to Captain Ukitake’s combat philosophy, which involves two types of battles: protecting life and protecting honor. Kaien took this further, believing both ultimately converged into what he termed "Heart." He saw "Heart" as something created between people when they think or remember each other, rather than something internal. To him, "Heart" resided in others and continued to exist with comrades even after death. Consequently, he felt that no one should die alone.
Kaien's favorite food was ohagi, and he enjoyed taking afternoon naps whenever possible.
