Jūshirō Ukitake is the captain of the 13th Division in the Gotei 13. He appears frail with long white hair and is highly respected for his honesty, loyalty, and strong sense of justice.
He has been close friends with Shunsui Kyōraku, the captain of the 8th Division, since they were young, over 2000 years ago. They often collaborate on missions.
Ukitake's strength as a captain suggests he is a formidable fighter. Despite being one of the strongest captains alongside Yamamoto, Kyōraku, Unohana, and Aizen, his illness limits his combat duration. Excessive exertion causes him to cough up blood, a symptom of his tuberculosis.
Although the full extent of his abilities remains unseen, both he and Kyōraku managed to hold their own against General Yamamoto for an extended period. Yamamoto, who trained them personally, stated that Jūshirō and Shunsui possess greater battlefield powers than any other generation.
The ability of his Zanpakuto was revealed during a battle against Starrk and Lilynette. When attacked by energy-based attacks like a Cero, the left sword absorbs the beam. The cord connecting the two swords transfers and amplifies the charge using talismans, which then gets fired out from the right sword at equal or greater speed than the original attack.
