Izuru Kira was born into a lesser noble family, losing his parents at a young age. During his time at the Shinigami Academy, he formed close friendships with Momo Hinamori, Renji Abarai, and Shūhei Hisagi. After graduating, Kira, along with Renji and Momo, was assigned to the 5th Division. Later, when Gin Ichimaru became the Captain of the 3rd Division, Kira joined his division. Kira is known for his unwavering loyalty to both his friends and his duties, sometimes to a fault. Despite his deep friendship with Momo Hinamori, he defended his captain even when she was consumed by grief over her own captain's apparent death. He later referred to himself as a "monster" for raising his sword against her.
Kira's Zanpakutou is named Wabisuke. Its Shikai command is "Raise your head." When activated, Wabisuke transforms its blade into a square hook shape. In this form, it doubles the weight of whatever it strikes, affecting both objects and living beings. Although this ability may seem insignificant in sword combat, its effect is cumulative. With each strike, the weight doubles, making it impossible for opponents to lift their swords after seven or eight hits. As the effect becomes noticeable, Kira's opponents often find themselves on their knees with heads bowed, symbolizing an act of apology, hence the name of his Zanpakutou.
