Iron Maiden Jeanne is a fictional character from the anime series Shaman King. She is voiced by Yui Horie in the Japanese version and was born on March 2, 1990, in Mont Saint-Michel, France. Her blood type is AB. Jeanne is an 11-year-old girl from France and a powerful shaman in her own right. She leads the X-Laws, a group dedicated to fighting evil. Her title "Iron Maiden" comes from her habit of staying inside an iron maiden to increase her strength by maintaining a near-death state. She rarely leaves it unless absolutely necessary, believing her suffering will bring justice to the world. However, her iron maiden was eventually crushed, likely beyond repair. Jeanne is known for her striking red eyes and very pale hair, giving her an almost fragile appearance. Despite her intimidating demeanor, she is extremely charismatic. In the English anime, Tamao Tamamura calls her a "princess" after hearing her speak for the first time. Little is known about Jeanne's history or family situation. She is supposedly named after Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), one of France's patron saints. According to the series, Jeanne was a French country girl with shamanic powers who received a divine revelation at the age of ten while praying in a Catholic church. A cross of light appeared, and a mysterious voice revealed that the world would be destroyed unless it was purged of an evil force. Recognizing this evil force as Hao Asakura, Jeanne decided to become a shaman. Jeanne harbors a passionate hatred for Hao, whom she believes to be the ultimate evil. While she sees herself as a martyr and remains soft-spoken and compassionate towards the X-Laws, especially towards young Lyserg Diethel (whom she defended and praised several times when Marco was too harsh on him), she has become detached from humanity. She fails to see that not everything is black and white. In some ways, Jeanne is similar to Hao. Both believe their actions will ultimately help the world, even if they involve indiscriminate killing. However, while Hao is fully aware of his evil nature, Jeanne genuinely believes she is stopping the fighting and helping despite the deaths caused. When in her armored form, Jeanne wears spiked sandals that do not pierce her feet and a giant lock on her abdominal region, resembling a chastity belt. These items seem to symbolize self-flagellation. Though she appears emotionless, her eyes can well up with tears, and the eyes on the face of the Iron Maiden will cry tears of blood when she feels sad. In the manga, it is revealed that Jeanne is not actually a savior with omnipotent purity. She was an orphan taken in by Luchist, the original leader of the X-Laws, who later became one of Hao's followers. Jeanne herself is an ordinary girl granted shamanic powers. After being attacked alongside Marco and Lyserg Diethel by Anahol, the brother of a man killed by Jeanne during the Shaman Fight, she is revived by Sati. She then joins Yoh in the semi-finals of the tournament. Later, she revives Ren and Horo-horo after they were killed by a Patch official.
