Her art has caught the eye of numerous professional artists who insistently urge her to submit her work to exhibitions to heighten her publicity, which she finds daunting. She is 18 years old at the beginning of the series and appears much younger, behaving like a child. Raised in a largely sheltered and obscure home by her irritable grandmother, her sociability is below average. It is during this time that Hagu develops her skill in drawing and painting, her only pastime, though she finds little to sketch save for the unchanging view from her porch, varying only with the seasons. Hagu hails from Azumino city, Nagano-ken. She is introduced to Takemoto, Morita, and Mayama by Shūji, her mother's cousin and also a professor at the college. Upon meeting her, both Morita and Takemoto fall in love with her, expressing their feelings differently. Hagu remains unaware of their affections and sees them as friends. However, Morita expresses his love for her in peculiar ways, often leading to situations where Hagu tries to escape from whatever scheme Morita has planned. Over time, Hagu begins to develop feelings for Morita, although she initially does not realize this, as pointed out by Shūji. Hagu is very shy and nervous when interacting with people, leading other art students to think she is strange. She doesn't seem to be close with family members either, except for Shūji, whom she affectionately calls "Shū-chan." As the series progresses, Hagu forms deeper bonds with Takemoto, Mayama, Morita, and Yamada, essentially seeing them as a sort of family. When Shūji leaves for a research project in Mongolia, Hagu lives with Yamada (whom she calls "Ayu"), and they become very close friends. During parties, Hagu is seen crying due to envy over Yamada's beautiful legs and breasts. Mayama tries hard to comfort her but fails miserably, saying, "You'll have one of those when you're older... probably." While Hagu cries, Morita also sheds tears, moved by her infectious sadness. Later in the series, Hagu starts avoiding Takemoto after he confesses his feelings for her, leaving doubts about whether his love is reciprocated. In the latest manga chapters, she admits that she likes Morita but would rather be with Shūji because she knows he can take care of her, especially after a life-altering accident that may permanently impair her abilities as an artist.
