Gin's attire is fairly standard, except for the lime green interior of his captain's cloak, and he doesn't wear any distinctive accessories. However, his appearance is quite unique: his eyes are perpetually slitted, he has an unusually slender build, and he sports unusual silver hair with a purple hue in the anime. He also maintains a wide smile most of the time, which he rarely removes.
Due to his emotionless speech and sarcastic demeanor, Gin is distrusted by many, including Toshiro Hitsugaya and Rukia Kuchiki. Rukia once remarked that she felt like snakes were wrapping around her neck whenever Gin spoke. Kaname Tousen noted that Gin has a similar unsettling effect on almost everyone, explaining Wonderwice Margera’s frightened reaction to him. In the anime, Gin speaks with a distinct Kyoto dialect, which is indirect and polite. His English dubbed voice is also formal and polite but carries a mocking and facetious undertone.
Gin is often called "Kitsune" (Fox-Faced) by Ichigo.
Little is known about Gin's past, except that he once saved 10th Division Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto's life. They have been friends since then, and Matsumoto is one of the few people Gin genuinely cares about.
He graduated from the Shinigami Academy around the same time as Kisuke Urahara became a captain and was immediately given a seated position due to being hailed as a genius, graduating in only a year at a very young age, marking the fastest graduation in history.
It is known that Gin served as the lieutenant of 5th Division Captain Sosuke Aizen before becoming the captain of the 3rd Division, achieving this rank simultaneously with Byakuya Kuchiki.
His true reason for joining Aizen was to kill him one day. Gin secretly observed Aizen stealing souls from Rokongai and instinctively understood that Aizen was a dangerous man who needed to be eliminated. During his second fight with Ichigo, Gin offered wisdom and advice, knowing that Ichigo stood no chance against Aizen as long as he doubted himself. After arriving in the Soul Society with Aizen during the "Fake Karakura Town" arc, Gin finally made his move and revealed the true name and power of his zanpakuto. Although he appeared to succeed in taking the hogyoku from Aizen’s chest, he underestimated Aizen's bond with it and was quickly defeated. Barely clinging to life, Gin lasted long enough for Rangiku to reach him and died shortly after Ichigo arrived. Noting the resolve in Ichigo’s eyes, Gin said he could now die and leave the rest to Ichigo.
