Gaimon is a character whose body becomes trapped in an empty treasure chest after he loses his grip while climbing a small cliff on the mysterious Island of Rare Animals, known as Gold Island in the 4Kids dub. He was searching for treasure with his pirate crew, but they abandon him on the island. The treasure chest becomes his new body and cannot be removed, although he retains the use of his hands, head, and feet. It takes twenty years before someone else finds him.
After becoming stuck in the chest, Gaimon can no longer climb the cliff. To protect his treasures, he uses a gun and his eerie voice to scare off intruders. Monkey D. Luffy and his crew pass Gaimon's tests and start to form a friendship. However, when Luffy reaches the top of the cliff, Gaimon discovers that the treasure chests there are also empty, meaning he had been guarding a nonexistent "treasure" for two decades. Although offered a place on the Straw Hat crew, he declines. Instead, he considers the animals on the island to be his true treasures and vows to protect them.
In the "Special Cover Miniseries," Chibi Buggy meets and befriends Gaimon.
