Espa Roba, known as "Esper" Roba in the English anime, is a duelist who claims to have ESP. In reality, he is a fraud who uses his younger brothers to spy on and relay back information about his opponent's hand, allowing him to seemingly predict their strategies.
Roba is a young duelist who entered Battle City to uphold his reputation and protect his younger brothers. He is first shown defeating Rex Raptor and taking his "Serpent Night Dragon." Rex advises Joey Wheeler not to duel Roba, claiming that Espa’s psychic abilities allow him to read all of his opponent's cards. Confidently, Joey accepts the challenge and begins the duel.
Initially, Roba gains an advantage because he knows what cards are in Joey’s hand and on his field. However, Joey soon figures out what is happening and tries to confuse Roba by placing "Skull Dice" and "Graceful Dice" close together. Mokuba Kaiba eventually discovers that Espa's "psychic" abilities come from his brothers spying on Joey from a nearby building. Despite this, the brothers plead with Mokuba to let Roba continue the duel, stating that he is a strong duelist despite his cheating. This façade was meant to build an image of an unbeatable duelist to shield Roba and his brothers from abuse. Understanding this, Mokuba allows the duel to continue.
Roba eventually summons "Jinzo," severely crippling Joey’s strategy. Joey counters with "Roulette Beetle" ("Roulette Spider"), which forces "Jinzo" to attack a random target on the field. Jinzo attacks Espa’s "Reflect Bounder," which reflects the assault back onto "Jinzo," destroying both monsters and costing Roba the duel. According to Battle City rules, Roba forfeits his rarest card, "Jinzo," to Joey upon his defeat. He comments that he is ready to stand up for his brothers without resorting to cheating.
In the Japanese epilogue, Roba makes a cameo to duel Mako Tsunami.
In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Espa Roba is listed as one of the players defeated by Mukuro Enjo.
