Dalton was once a guard serving under King Wapol but opposed Wapol's harsh treatment of his subjects. He was seen accompanying Wapol in Alabasta during a meeting with Princess Nefertari Vivi's father. Inspired by Hiruluk, Dalton rebelled after witnessing Hiruluk's noble sacrifice. His rebellion led to him being subdued and imprisoned by Wapol and his henchmen, Chess and Kuromarimo, who constantly mocked him.
After Wapol abandoned the kingdom during Blackbeard's invasion, Dalton took charge, preventing the island from falling into chaos and quickly earning the trust of the people. When Monkey D. Luffy and his crew arrived on Drum Island seeking medical help for Nami during their mission to escort Princess Nefertari Vivi to Alabasta, they encountered Dalton and some villagers who mistook them for robbers. Dalton informed them that the only doctor capable of helping Nami was Dr. Kureha, a witch.
Even after Wapol returned and subdued him again, Dalton continued to receive support from the people and even the top 20 doctors. He was severely wounded defending the townsfolk from arrows fired by one of Wapol's bodyguards. In retaliation, Dalton planned extreme measures, including blowing up Wapol's castle. Fortunately, Luffy defeated Wapol and knocked him off the island. The people of Drum then elected Dalton as their new king and renamed the island Sakura Kingdom, inspired by the special chemical created by Hiruluk that turned the snow pink.
Dalton later appeared in chapter 440, showing Dr. Kureha the new bounty posters of the Straw Hat Pirates. He chose not to live in the castle, preferring life in the village. Dalton has eaten the Devil Fruit known as the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Bison, which grants him the ability to transform into a bison or a half-human, half-bison form resembling a minotaur. In the English anime, this fruit is called the "Ox Ox Fruit," and he transforms into an ox instead.
