Chigiri Shijima was the first captain of the 4th Division over a millennium ago. As one of the original captains of the Gotei 13, Chigiri possessed an immense amount of spiritual energy, which he showcased by effortlessly defeating and killing numerous Quincy warriors during the initial invasion of Soul Society.
As a captain in the Gotei 13, Chigiri exhibited remarkable proficiency in Zanjutsu. This was evident when he beheaded several Lichtreich soldiers using only his sealed Zanpakuto.
Yhwach noted that Chigiri was notorious for being a ruthless and cold-blooded killer, a reputation he earned by massacring the Quincy of the Lichtreich during their first attack on Soul Society.
