Byakuya Kuchiki is the captain of the 6th Division in the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Renji Abarai. As the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki clan, one of the four noble families in Soul Society, Byakuya exhibits an aristocratic demeanor, often appearing quiet and indifferent towards others.
He believes that life isn't meant to be entertaining and even invented a game intended to be unamusing. Despite his cold and regal exterior, Byakuya deeply cares for those close to him.
Byakuya is popular among female shinigami in Soul Society, having been voted number one in the "captain we desire to release a photo book for" poll conducted by the Shinigami Women's Association.
He wears the standard captain uniform, complemented by a white headpiece called a kenseikan, symbolizing his noble status as the head of the Kuchiki family. Additionally, he dons a white scarf made by Tsujishirō Kuroemon III from silver-white windflower light silk, a family heirloom passed down through generations.
Little is known about Byakuya's early history, except that he frequently played tag using flash steps with Yoruichi Shihouin, though he never managed to beat her.
Byakuya married Hisana, who was then a commoner, thus breaking clan rules by accepting her into the noble Kuchiki family. Before her death, Hisana asked Byakuya to find and adopt her biological sister, Rukia, whom she had abandoned as a baby. She also requested that he not reveal Rukia's true origins.
A year later, Rukia entered the shinigami academy, and shortly after, Byakuya found and adopted her, fulfilling Hisana’s last wish but breaking clan rules again. He swore on his parents' graves never to break the rules again, which later puts him in a moral dilemma regarding Rukia's execution.
It is implied that Byakuya became the captain of the 6th division less than 50 years before the main Bleach storyline, around the same time Gin Ichimaru became captain of the 3rd Division.
Byakuya's zanpakutou, Senbonzakura, scatters its blade into a thousand tiny blades upon the command "scatter." These blades are invisible but appear as cherry blossoms due to how light reflects off them. Byakuya can control these blades at will, allowing him to attack opponents from a distance and penetrate almost any defense.
His bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, is essentially a larger version of Senbonzakura's shikai. Activated by dropping his sword, two rows of giant blades rise from the ground behind Byakuya and scatter into a million tiny blades, providing both offensive and defensive capabilities.
Senbonzakura Kageyoshi has two additional forms. The first, "scene of a massacre," consolidates the scattered petals into complete swords forming four rows around Byakuya and his opponent. The second, "final scene," condenses all the tiny blades into a single sword, significantly increasing its cutting power. This form is known as the "white imperial sword," and Byakuya gains spiritual energy wings and a halo-like circle.
