brahms

Brahms is introduced in chapter 5, though his first appearance occurs in chapter 9. He is described as the sole entity standing above all vampires, known as the Undead King. Brahms is seen as a significant obstacle to the Aesir, even more so than the Vanir. We first encounter Brahms when Hrist seeks him out at his castle. Upon confronting her, Hrist insists they "continue and fight this battle from our last life!" Brahms appears calm and reasonable. When Hrist commands him to fight, Brahms argues that with Ragnarok—the war in which the Aesir gods will perish—imminent, it's pointless to do their bidding. Hrist remains unconvinced, and Brahms tries to make her aware that the Gods are using her. Unmoved, Hrist and Brahms engage in battle. Brahms warns Hrist that the Vanir will ally with the Undead, ensuring the Aesir's defeat in Ragnarok. He expresses this with concern rather than malice, indicating that Brahms is not purely an antagonist or villain. The fight is interrupted by Lezard, Arngrim, Jelanda, and Mystina, who inform Hrist they have come for Lenneth's soul. Brahms listens patiently and seems to agree with the Einherjar. Surprisingly, he offers his power to aid in defeating Hrist. Before annihilating Hrist, Brahms tells her that even as a Goddess of Destiny, she cannot defy destiny itself, and he looks forward to fighting her again. In the final chapter, Brahms obstructs Lenneth's path as she confronts Loki. He admits that despite Ragnarok having started, he is bound to fight and try conquering the world for his clan. Arngrim and Jelanda offer to fight Brahms for Lenneth, with only Arngrim shown engaging Brahms. It's clear Arngrim holds a personal grudge against Brahms, as Lawfer was murdered by a vampire under Brahms' command. During their fight, Brahms remarks, "We really have the same fate as our last lives." Their battle is interrupted by Bloodbane, Loki's evil dragon. The two agree to combine their strength to defeat this new enemy. Brahms originated in Valkyrie Profile (Playstation) and does not appear elsewhere.
