Bason is the spirit of an ancient Chinese wujiang who loyally serves Ren without question. In the English manga, Bason addresses Ren as "Master Ren," while in the Japanese version, he calls him "Bocchama," meaning "Young Master." Over time, Bason becomes a cherished friend to his young master, Ren. His date of birth and blood type remain unknown.
Bason has served the Tao family for several generations and has pledged to assist Ren by any means necessary. He wields a kwan dao, a weapon akin to a halberd with one curved edge and one straight edge along the handle. During his time as an ancient Chinese warrior, Bason rode into battle on a horse named Hei-Tao. The spirit of Hei-Tao can be integrated into another horse, Bai-Feng, owned by Ren, to perform the Perfect Re-enactment of the Vorpal Dance. Bason can enhance Ren's kwan dao with immense strength and speed, even increasing its size, but also uses his own body for attacks like the Golden Punch. In his Giant Spirit Form, Bason transforms into a colossal robot capable of launching fireballs.
Like Ren, Bason initially appears cold and cruel at the start of the series. However, after interacting with You Asakura, both Bason and Ren begin to soften and develop more amiable personalities. Bason feels a profound sense of duty to his master, breaking down in tears when Ren is imprisoned by his father. Initially, Bason and Amidamaru are hostile and competitive towards each other, but they eventually become friendly rivals.
