One of the most distinctive features of Ace is his tattoos. Despite 4Kids' previous edits to crosses, Ace's back tattoo remains intact in the English dub. Interestingly, Ace also promotes his tattoo to Luffy, which is quite unusual by 4Kids standards. On his back, Ace has a tattoo of the Whitebeard symbol: a skull with a white mustache and a manji behind it. To avoid confusion and prevent any association with Nazi symbols, this was changed to crossbones forming a "cross" shape in the anime and the latest manga chapter. Ace also has a tattoo on his left shoulder that reads "ASCE," with the "S" crossed out. This could be due to a mistake by the tattoo artist, or it might represent the flag of his old crew. Another interpretation is that it symbolizes his deceased sworn brother Sabo. In the English version of the anime, Ace's shoulder tattoo is edited out, as he is referred to there as "Portgas D. Trace." He appears in One Piece Grand Adventure without the tattoo on his arm. Ace travels around the Grand Line on a boat designed to use his Mera Mera no Mi powers to fuel the engine, allowing it to move. Currently, Ace is one of two pirates known to have escaped arrest by Marine Captain Smoker, the other being his younger brother Luffy. Ace and Smoker fought to a standstill in Alabasta. He left Fuusha Village three years before Luffy and became a loyal crew member under Whitebeard, commanding the Second Division. The two brothers share a clear resemblance, though Ace is more muscular than the lanky Luffy. Ace also has rather childish freckles and suffers from narcolepsy, a trait common in his family, causing him to fall asleep unexpectedly. Personality-wise, Ace is more intelligent, polite, and generally more tolerable than his younger brother, leading the Straw Hat crew to wonder if they are truly related. However, the brothers are very close, with Ace showing typical good-big-brother behaviors, such as asking the crew to look after Luffy. It was revealed at the One Piece Ten exhibition that Ace had a bounty of 550,000,000 berries. Later, it was disclosed that Ace is not biologically related to Luffy but is instead the son of Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. Ace took his mother's surname as a tribute for sacrificing her life during childbirth. Ace harbors deep resentment towards his father for "abandoning" his mother.
